흙의 에너지는 원의 형태를 그리며 운동한다. 지구의 자전이 그러하고, 만물이 땅에서 태어나 다시 흙으로 소멸하는 생명의 순환도 그러하다. 물레의 회전을 통해 빚어지는 도자기는 이러한 흙의 특성이 응축된 메타포라 할 수 있다. 흙의 물질적 상상력은 비단 도자기의 존재론적 구조뿐만 아니라 그 문화사적 여정에도 드러난다. 문명과 문명 사이를 넘나드는 교류 속에서 도자기는 이질적인 요소들이 서로 만나 공존하는 다중적 융합의 매개가 되며 지평을 끊임없이 확장했다. 특히 동아시아 도자문화는 오랜 시간 세계를 매혹시키며 사물과 상징의 경계, 공예와 예술의 경계, 산업과 문화의 경계 등을 넘나드는 이동을 통해 대지가 갖는 포용과 창조의 힘을 구현해 왔다.

옛 도자와 함께 흙의 상상력을 바탕으로 이에 공명하는 현대미술작품을 소개함으로써 이번 전시는 남원 도자문화의 비전을 제시하고자 한다. 매체와 시대의 구분을 가로지르며 흙이 가진 응축과 확장의 힘이 회전을 통해 전개되는 양상은 도자에 대한 새로운 접근법을 보여줄 것이다.

Focusing on the properties of the earth, the material of ceramic, this exhibition seeks to examine the ceramic culture of Namwon, which has been mixing and flowing for over 400 years. The energy of the earth, which is considered one of the fundamental elements that form the basis of the universe, regardless of East or West, moves in the form of a circle. The rotation of the Earth is like that, and so is the cycle of life in which all things are born from the earth and go back to the earth. Pottery made through the rotation of a potter's wheel can be said to be a metaphor that condenses these characteristics of soil. The material imagination of clay is revealed not only in the ontological structure of pottery but also in its cultural and historical journey. In the exchange between civilizations, ceramics became a medium for multiple fusions where heterogeneous elements met and coexisted, constantly expanding its horizons. In particular, East Asian ceramic culture has fascinated the world for a long time, embodying the power of inclusion and creation of the earth through movement across the boundaries between objects and symbols, between crafts and art, and between industry and culture.

This exhibition seeks to present a vision of Namwon ceramic culture by introducing contemporary works of art that resonate with the imagination of the earth along with old ceramics. The way the power of condensation and expansion of the earth unfolds through rotation across the boundaries of media and time will show a new approach to ceramics.
