성곡미술관은 다가오는 5월 30일부터 8월 18일까지 기획전 《프랑스현대사진 French Photography Today: A New Vision of Reality》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 성곡미술관에서 2008년 이후 약 16년 만에 열리는 대규모의 프랑스 현대 사진전으로, 2020년부터 매년 프랑스 파리에서 진행되고 있는 《포토 데이즈 Photo Days》의 설립자이자 디렉터인 엠마뉘엘 드 레코테(Emmanuelle de l’Ecotais)가 공동 기획자로 참여한다.

프랑스에서 활동하는 작가 22명이 참여하는 이번 전시는, 고전적 주제부터 현대적 기술까지 아우르는 프랑스 현대 사진의 흐름을 펼쳐 보인다. 과학기술의 발달에 힘입어 프랑스에서 사진술이 탄생한 지 200여 년이 흐른 오늘날, 인공지능과 같은 최첨단 기술이 적극적으로 도입되며 사진의 범주가 확장되고 표현 방식 역시 다채로워지고 있다. 이러한 프랑스 현대 사진의 다양성과 역동성을 드러내는 작품을 서양 전통 회화의 주제인 ‘자연’, ‘정물’, ‘인간’, ‘공간’으로 나누어 오늘날의 사진을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 사진에 대한 우리의 인식을 돌아보고 사진만의 예술적 가치를 조명하고자 한다.

Sungkok Art Museum is pleased to present French Photography Today: A New Vision of Reality. The exhibition has invited French artists who have been witness to the beginning and end of photography during this period of radical changes to take part in a very special exhibition. Co-curated with Emmanuelle de l’Ecotais, the current director of the Photo Days photography festival and former curator of photography at the Modern Art Museum of the City of Paris, this exhibition presents the photographic works of 22 leading French artists. These artists reveal the traces of the many competitions, collaborations, and tensions that have characterized the relationship between photography and fine art for nearly 200 years.

The first section, whose theme is nature, searches for the very same pristine nature and alternative ways to restore ecosystems which have been—and continue to be—destroyed by human’s anthropocentric activities, while also exploring the interaction between nature, culture, society, and humans. The second section’s theme, still lifes, shows a reinterpretation of the genre of Western painting born in the late 17th century of the same name, connecting humans with the world to create a special dialogue between them through the charm of ordinary, everyday objects. The third section, which falls under the theme of humans, goes beyond the classic Western genre often referred to as figure painting or portrait painting in a way that allows visitors to address the extremely complex issue of artificial intelligence and the advent of “new humans.” Finally, in the fourth section, whose theme is spaces, the artists take their notion of the traditional three dimensions and connect them to spaces from virtual and transcendental dimensions. As a result, a new spectrum of spaces—one where reality, imagination, and virtuality overlap—appear. In this way, French Photography Today classifies photography into certain traditional categories of fine art to present the diversity of the French photography scene today. At the same time, it would appear as if today’s artists had some concerns about those same traditional categories of fine art and reflected these concerns through their own contemporary art.
