두산갤러리 뉴욕에서는 백승우의 개인전 『Memento』를 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 8섹션으로 구성된 64점의 사진작품들이 선보일 예정이다.

백승우는 변형되고 조작된 현실의 이중성을 보여주거나, 현실과 가상을 혼합 혹은 대비시키는 작품을 통하여 사진의 진정한 의미와 새로운 확장 가능성에 대해 탐구하는 작가이다. 이번에 선보일『Memento』 시리즈는 미국의 벼룩시장에서 구입한 5만 여점의 사진들 중 1차로 작가가 선별한 이미지들에 대해 여덟 명의 초대자가 각각 임의로 작품제목을 기입하여 구성된 사진이다. 이와같이 무작위로 선택된 사진들이 출처와는 상관없이 개인적인 판단에 따라 제목이 결정되어 새로운 의미로 재구성되는 과정을 통해 사진의 진정한 의미와 가치에 대해 되돌아 보게 하며, 이제는 '사진'이 단순한 정보의 기록과 전달 수단으로서가 아니라 정보의 혼합과 변형 등의 가치를 획득해 갈수 있는 매개체로의 확장 가능성에 대해 보여주고자 한다. 백승우는 중앙대학교 사진학과 학사와 석사를 졸업하고, 영국의 미들섹스대학교 대학원에서 미술이론으로 석사를 마쳤다. 아트선재센터 (2011, 서울, 한국), 미사신 갤러리 (2011, 동경, 일본), 일우스페이스 (2010, 서울, 한국), 가나아트 뉴욕 (2009, 뉴욕, 미국), 포일갤러리 (2007, 동경, 일본) 등에서 개인전을 가졌고, 산타바바라 미술관 (2010, 산타바바라, 미국), CU 미술관 (2010, 콜로라도, 미국), 국립대만미술관 (2010, 대만), 휴스턴 미술관 (2009, 휴스턴, 미국), 국립현대미술관 (2009, 과천, 한국), 마루가메 이노쿠마 겐이치로 현대미술관 (2009, 가가와, 일본), 샌프란시스코 현대미술관 (2009, 샌프란시스코, 미국) 등 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다.

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to introduce 'Memento,' a solo exhibition of Seung Woo Back, from June 14 to July 14, 2012. The exhibition features eight series of his latest works which created by sixty-four photographs. The exhibition presents Memento series, which accompanied the photographs he bought at the flea markets during his visit to the United States. Back deliberately made first selection among his collection of 50,000 photographs then seven of his colleagues made final selection and named them after their personal tastes and individual's memories. In this manner, eight people imbued new significant to the non-attributable photographs, thus its original intention has vanished and distorted by fallacy. Throughout the process, Back suggests the photography's capability of multiple interpretations beyond one-sidedness reality and potential dangers of its rash judgment. Back has sought to expand the scope of photography as a medium by questioning its nature and function inside out of his practice. He intends to focus the essential of photography by rejecting its general acceptation, a documentational method via pursuing the definition and aspect of photography in contemporary art.
