두산갤러리 서울에서는 2013년 3월 7일부터 4월 4일까지 이지현의 개인전『Threshold』를 개최한다. 2012년 하반기 두산 레지던시 뉴욕 입주작가였던 이지현의 이번 전시는 2008년 이후 서울에서 개최하는 첫 개인전으로 레지던시 입주기간 동안 완성된 신작이 포함된 회화 10점과 작은 크기의 회화 30여점을 선보일 예정이다.

이지현의 작품은 그의 무의식 속에 파편적으로 부유하는 기억들이 현실에서 경험하는 공간들과 만나면서 보다 다층적인 이야기의 구조를 보여준다. 즉, 공간에 대한 시지각의 경험이 개인의 기억과 만나면서 중첩되고 편집되어 비가시적인 제3의 공감각적 풍경으로 구현된다. 이번 전시의 제목인 'threshold'는 건축에서 실제로는 존재하지만 도면 상에는 나타나지 않는 공간을 뜻한다. 이는 이지현의 작품에서 무의식 속 어딘가에 존재하는 공간들을 연결시키는 상징적 고리로 작용한다. 기존 작품에서 유명한 미술관이나 성당과 같은 대중적인 공간과 작가의 방, 서재, 물건들이 역동적으로 뒤섞여 초현실적인 풍경을 보여 주었다면, 신작에서는 이지현의 일상적 공간 속에서 파편화된 기억이나 생각의 연상작용으로 만들어지는 연속적 이미지들이 패턴화되어 그물 형태나 벌집구조, 혹은 모래사장의 발자국 등으로 연결되어 형상화된다. 이번 전시에서는 사유의 흔적을 구조화하여 이미지로 확장시킨 대형 신작 회화들과 더불어 현재까지 사유 과정과 고민을 집약하여 보여주는 작은 크기의 회화그룹「Fantasma」(Fantasma는 시간이 오래 걸리는 대형 회화 작업을 하면서 메모하듯이 옆에 두고 그리는 작은 크기의 회화 작업들에게 작가가 붙인 제목이다. 이 작품들은 보다 생생하게 작가의 생각을 전달하는 일종의 이미지 에세이로 볼 수 있다.) 연작도 같이 선보이게 된다. ■ 두산갤러리 서울


DOOSAN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present Threshold, a solo exhibition by Jihyun Lee, from March 7th to April 4th, 2013. As Lee's first solo exhibition in Seoul since 2008, this exhibition presents 10 large scale paintings and a number of small paintings by the artist, including Lee's recent works produced during her residency period at DOOSAN Residency New York in 2012.

Fragments of memories floating in Lee's subconsciousness join real experienced spaces in her work, constructing multiple layers of narratives. Visual experiences of spaces are collected and edited as they meet personal memories, transforming into a non-visual multisensory space. Threshold, the title of the exhibition, refers to a space that actually exists in architecture but does not appear on the floor plan. In Lee's work, threshold functions as a symbolic link which connects to spaces that exist somewhere in subconsciousness. Her previous works portrayed surrealistic landscapes which combined public spaces like famous art museums and cathedrals with private spaces such as the artist's room, study and objects. In Lee's recent works, series of images — created through the effect of association from fragmented memories and thoughts in Lee's everyday spaces — are patterned, forming net-like beehive structures or footprints on sand banks. Also on display in the exhibition are the small paintings from Fantasma Series, which intensively demonstrate the Lee's thought processes up to this point. ■ DOOSAN Gallery Seoul
