2013년 한 해, 건축, 실험영화, 디자인 등의 탈장르 전시를 개최하며 현대미술의 지평을 넓히는데 앞장서온 서울시립미술관(관장 김홍희)은 동시대 미술의 대안적이고 실험적인 흐름 및 발전적 미래를 조망하기 위하여 지난 7월 본관 3층 한 켠에 ‘프로젝트 갤러리’를 신설하여 전시를 선보이고 있다.

오는 크리스마스 이브인 12월24일에는 회화를 기반으로 꾸준히 자신들만의 작업세계를 구축해온 청년작가 5인(김하영, 신창용, 이현진, 조문기, 홍승표)의 단체전인 "태도가 형식이 될 때"를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 게임, 드라마, 애니메이션, 공상과학 영화 등의 대중매체와 함께 성장해온 동시대 작가들이 회화를 대하는 진지한 태도를 고민하고, 이러한 태도가 제시하는 새로운 형식의 회화를 살펴보는 자리를 가진다.

캔버스뿐만 아니라 동판, 드래프팅 필름, 유리 등 다양한 매체로 이루어진 화폭에는 슈퍼히어로와 TV 드라마의 통속적인 장면들, 그리고 만화적인 상상력이 가득한 캐릭터가 등장한다. 작가들은 현실과 가상세계 사이의 인터페이스(interface)가 되어 대중매체와 스스로를 통합(integrate)시키는데, 이는 대중매체 속의 이미지를 단순히 차용하는 기존의 팝아트와는 그 태도를 달리한다.

크리스마스와 연말연시를 맞이하여 가로 22m 세로 15m 높이의 미술관 건물 전체 벽면과 창문에 이현진의 "Whole World Happy"가 전시의 일환으로 설치되어 미술관을 찾는 관람객에게 다양한 볼거리를 제공한다. 전시 오프닝 당일인 12월24일 오후 4시에는 인디밴드인 불나방스타쏘세지클럽과 아나킨프로젝트가 축하공연을 펼칠 예정이다. 전시는 오는 2014년 2월2일까지 계속된다.

Art as an attitude

Expanding its horizon to architecture, experimental film, design in 2013, Seoul Museum of Art newly opened a Project Gallery on the third floor of the main building to host exhibitions dedicated to alternative and experimental art to provide a prospectus of visual arts.

"When Attitudes Become Form" is an exhibition of painters of younger generation who grew up with mass media such as video game, TV drama, animation, SF film, with an aim to highlight a new attitude toward painting. The artists are from the so-called “Otaku” generation, who live and work as individuals. In their paintings, they become an interface itself to link everyday reality to virtual reality by integrating themselves with mass media. This attitude differs themselves from Pop Art that appropriates images from mass media with a political, philosophical and sociological criticism.

On the painting surface composed of various materials such as copperplate, drafting film and glass, there appear super heroes or melodramatic scenes from TV dramas with cartoon imagination. They display a consumeristic attitude that is self-conscious of others’ eyes and a narcissistic manner caused by eco-centric thinking. These reflect their personal viewpoints of the reality manufactured by mass media overflowed with materialism and represent our desires and the zeitgeist.
