2020년 1월 13일부터 31일까지 탈영역우정국에서 열리는 정아람 개인전 <최저의 퍼포먼스>는 효율성에 반하는 저성장을 지향하는 최근의 글로벌한 흐름들과 관련하면서, 생산성, 효율성, 정상성이 요구되는 상황에 처한, 끊임없는 가치평가의 대상이 된 개인의 퍼포먼스를 살펴본다.

이번 전시에서 선보이는 작업들은 기존의 퍼포먼스의 중단과 휴지상황을 그려내며, 개인의 처한 현재상황에서 ‘최저의 퍼포먼스’가 가지는 가능성과 가치를 탐구한다. 오늘날, 어떠한 과제가 주어지더라도 수행하라는 압력은 (그렇지 않으면 도태되거나, 잘리거나, 폐기처분될 것이라는 위험과 함께) 예술가를 포함하여 개인의 퍼포먼스에 깊이 내재한다.

전시 제목과 동명의 신작<최저의 퍼포먼스>는 미술가들이자 문화예술계 노동자들인 개인들과의 협업을 통해, 더 많이 수행하고 성취하며 긍정성을 연기해야하는 상황을 살펴본다. 일상의 행위들을 퍼포먼스 개념을 통해 정의해보고, 다양한 세대로 구성된 개인들의 소진 경험과 증후, 제안의 말들을 중학생의 목소리로 전달한다. 이렇게 여러 세대를 관통하며 더욱 강화되어가는 개인의 퍼포먼스에 가해지는 압력을 다가올 미래를 예견하듯 드러낸다.

2020년에 재구성하여 전시하는 국내 미발표작 <더 이상 죽은 사람의 사진을 찍지 마시오 (No More Picture With A Dead Body 는 신작과의 관계 속에서, 개인의 이미지 생산과 배포, 전송에서의 윤리뿐만 아니라 효율성의 극대화라는 압력 안에서 재편되어가는 신체와 장치의 퍼포먼스에 대해 질문한다.


In responding to the recent global movements based on pushing back against greater forms of efficiency, Ahram Jeong’s solo exhibition Performance Minimum (at Post Territory Ujeongguk, Seoul, from January 13th to January 31th, 2020) examines the performance of individuals that has become subjected to constant evaluation and remodeling in response to productivity, efficacy, and normativity.


The works in the exhibition visualize the suspension and pause of existing forms of performance, exploring the possibility and value of ‘performance minimum’ in the current conditions. Nowadays, the pressure to always perform regardless of task (always at the risk of becoming obsolete, fired, or disposed of) is deeply embedded in one’s performance - and this includes artists.


New work with the same name of exhibition title, Performance Minimum, made by collaborating with artists and cultural workers, observes the current status of individuals to perform and achieve more, while appearing as positive as possible. Redefining everyday activities with performance concepts, the voices of middle school students delivering the words of various generations’ experience of exhaustion and efforts to exist, reveal the intensifying pressure to perform while passing through different generations, in the context of foresight.

Presented to Korean audiences for the first time, No More Picture With A Dead Body, this newly reconstructed version in dialogue with the new work, questions not only the ethics of one’s image production, distribution, and transmission but also the performance of one’s body and apparatus as it is reorganized in the pressure of maximizing efficiency.
