갤러리현대는 한국 추상 회화의 대표 작가 정상화의 개인전 《무한한 숨결》을 6월 1일부터 7월 16일까지 개최한다. 《무한한 숨결》전은 정상화 작가와 갤러리현대와 함께하는 아홉 번째 개인전이다. 1970년대 이후 전개된 그의 독창적 그리드의 다양성을 주목하고, 매체 실험을 통한 작가의 조형적 탐구 정신을 재조명하기 위해 기획되었다. 전시에는 표면에 대한 정상화 작가의 독보적인 표현 양식을 살펴볼 수 있는 1970년대 작품부터 근작까지 40여 점이 대거 소개한다.

1960년대부터 현재까지, 작가는 끊임없이 자신만의 작업 프로세스를 연마해 갔다. 캔버스에 카오린과 아교 등의 재료를 혁신적으로 사용해 재료를 칠하고, 덧붙이고, 떼어내고, 메우는 노동집약적 방식을 도입했다. 또한 아크릴 물감과 유화 물감, 흑연, 한지 등으로 화면에 독창적인 질감과 레이어링 효과를 완성했다. 이번 전시는 다양한 그리드의 시적인 아름다움을 지닌 백색 작품을 집중적으로 선보이며, 그의 표면을 향한 탐구를 살펴보고자 한다. 카오린을 사용한 회화 작품 이외에도 프로타주, 데꼴라주, 목판, 아크릴 작업 등 실험적 요소가 강한 작품도 함께 선보여, 그가 한국 현대미술을 상징하는 작가로 자리매김해 나간 미적 여정을 추적한다.

Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce the opening of a solo exhibition Infinite Breath by Chung Sang-Hwa, a representative artist of Korean abstract painting, from June 1 to July 16. The Infinite Breath exhibition is the ninth solo exhibition of Chung Sang-Hwa at Gallery Hyundai. This exhibition aims to shed light on the diversity of Chung’s creative grids developed since the 1970s and to re-examine the artist's formative exploration through various media experiments. It includes approximately 40 works, ranging from 1970s to recent, and thus introduces the artist’s exceptional modes of expression on surface.

From the 1960s to the present, Chung Sang-Hwa has constantly honed his processes of art-making. He introduced a labor-intensive method of painting, adding, removing, and filling while innovatively using materials such as kaolin and glue on canvas. He has also created unique texture and achieved effects of layering with acrylic, oil paint, graphite, and hanji paper. This exhibition focuses on the works in a spectrum of whites that embrace poetic beauty of grids and it studies Chung’s exploration toward the surface. In addition to paintings using kaolin, works with strong experimental elements such as frottage, decollage, woodblock print, and acrylic pieces are also presented, hence tracing the artist’s aesthetic journey through which has established Chung Sang-Hwa as an iconic figure of Korean modern art.
